Support Staff




Typically not seen during the funeral, their presence behind the scenes is nonetheless critical to the day-to-day operation of our facilities.  Our support staff plays an important role in ensuring our high standard of service.  We are proud of their dedication and commitment.


Ian MacDonald, Family Care Director

Ian MacDonald, Family Care Director, joined our team in January 2009.  Ian is a licensed funeral director since 1995 and is passionate about his role. The Family Care program is available to families at no cost after the death of a loved one. Through this program, Ian meets with the family to assist them to complete necessary phone calls and paperwork pertaining to important matters that need attention after someone has passed away. Ian lives in St. Catharines with his wife and 2 children.

Vanessa Shannon, Pre Need Counselor

Vanessa Shannon has been our Pre-Planning Counselor since 2009. She currently resides in Niagara Falls with her husband Geoffrey and son Liam.  Vanessa is a proud graduate of Brock University and obtained an Honors Bachelor Degree in Business Communications. She is honored to have the privilege of educating and informing the community on what is involved with prearranged services at the George Darte Funeral Chapel. Vanessa meets with families at the funeral home or in your home to discuss the options available, as well Vanessa speaks to community groups about the importance of planning ahead.

Gary Bowman

Gary joined the Darte team in June of 2005 as a groundskeeper. Gary was born and raised in Chippawa. He and his wife Marianne, have lived in north St. Catharines since 1996 and are members of St. Alfred's Church. Gary is past president of the Niagara Falls Optimist Club and a life member of Optimist International. Retired for the past seven years, Gary enjoys working with seniors, travelling, golfing and gardening.

Winston , Comfort Dog

Winston joined the George Darte team as the funeral home's first Comfort Dog in 2009. He enjoys meeting new people as they come into the funeral home and spending time with kids that may be visiting. Winston is a Boston Terrier who is smart, energetic and friendly.
